Backing Masterclass
The Masterclass
format is a pedagogical tool which has long been overlooked in trad
music. As a participant, you will have the opportunity to accompany a
melody player (bring your own or use the “house band”) in a set of
tunes. Matt will offer suggestions on how to hone your backing in front
of your classmates; and while you are not performing, you get to learn
from your classmates’ lessons. The Masterclass combines elements of
performance and private instruction--a great way to put it all into
practice in a social and supportive environment.

FAQ
How does the Masterclass work?
Participants will have several opportunities to accompany a tune (or a
set of tunes) with an experienced Irish melody player. A mini-lesson
follows the “performance” while other class members observe. All
students have a chance to play and then to listen and learn from
others’ lessons.
Do I play every week?
Students who sign up for the entire session receive priority scheduling
to play. If performance slots remain, walk-in students may sign up to
play. There will be a sign up sheet for each week.
How long are the lessons?
This depends on the number of performers; but each lesson will be at least 20 minutes.
Can I bring my own melody player?
Sure. If you want to use this as a band coaching, that’s fine too. Otherwise, just use the fine melody player provided.
I play the oud--can I come?
While Matt’s expertise is in guitar and bouzouki, most chordal instruments are welcome. Ask if you’re not sure.
